Macy's Community Leadership

Macy’s, Inc. is proud of its track record as a caring and responsible corporate citizen. We reach out to our communities to develop solid, meaningful relationships. Through our charitable contributions, employment initiatives, active volunteerism and creation of unique economic relationships, we help produce stronger and healthier communities for our customers and employees. Giving back is a core value at Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s.

Our community leadership is visible at both the national and local level. Some examples are:

  • Supporting breast cancer and HIV/AIDS research and awareness.
  • Improving women’s heart health by sponsoring the American Heart Association’s “Go Red” Initiative.
  • Helping alleviate hunger in hundreds of cities through our “Bag Hunger” food pantry-restocking project.
  • Funding a two-part initiative at the African Presidential Archives and Research Center at Boston University.
  • Nurturing elementary school students through a Mentoring USA/Bloomingdale’s partnership.

Giving back also extends to volunteering. Through Partners in Time, our nationally recognized employee volunteer program operating in all of our divisions and locations nationwide, volunteers have given more than 100,000 hours in service annually in the cities where our associates work and live. That’s a grand total of 1.8 million hours of service since the program’s founding in 1988, which is valued at $30 million. Along the way, Partners in Time was honored with the Points of Light Foundation’s award for Excellent in Workforce Volunteerism.

Our diversity efforts also include strategic partnerships with community organizations and leaders in the cities where we live and work.

  • Our annual Passport fashion shows in San Francisco and Los Angeles have raised more than $28 million in the past 28 years for HIV/AIDS research and support. The 2005 event alone raised $1.6 million.
  • Bag Hunger, our annual hunger relief event conducted all across Macy’s divisions, has contributed an equivalent 58 million pounds of food, or 45 million meals, for hungry families throughout the country.
  • Our employees and their families and friends volunteered approximately 108,000 hours of time last year—valued at more than $2 million—to non-profit organizations. Since our Partners in Time volunteer program began 20 years ago, Macy’s, Inc. volunteers have given 1.8 million hours of service—valued at $30 million—to cities where we live and work.
  • Our associates in many cities participate in Pride marches and parades to celebrate their diversity.
  • Macy’s, Inc. supports leadership development through sponsorship and partnership with organizational events such as the Black Enterprise Women of Power and the LEADS/Spelman Women of Color conferences.
  • Key community partnerships include:
    • National Urban League
    • United Negro College Fund
    • Black Enterprise
    • Hispanic Scholarship Fund
    • Asian/Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund
